It sounds to me like you put in rod bearings that were too thin. If I were you, I would take the bottom end appart and change the rod bearings before you destroy the engine. You can do that with the engine in the car. Just drop the pan.

Yes, you can damage your $1K head! It is very difficult to predict what will happen when a rod lets go, primarily because you do not know at what engine speed it will be at when it does let go. It could throw a piston and rod into the head. Most times it throws them out the side, but ??? It's a gamble that I would not take.
