I just installed a 320i alternator last weekend (with the help of the archives and Tom Kent, who supplied advice as well as the part.)

It's a snap, but make sure you have a 77-79 model alternator. Later models have reversed mounting and adjustment fittings and will not work. Email me if you want installation istructions.

I've received conflicting posts about this question.

One said that its bolt-in, no mods required at all.

The other said that you need to re-route a blue regulator wire because the E12 alternator is internally regulated.

WHICH IS IT?

I initially liked the E12 solution because I thought it was:

a) Had solid bushings
b) Totally bolt-in
c) More amperage

If a later E12 (1979-81) alternator is not totally bolt-in, is an earlier one (1977) better for my criteria?

Thanks for any clarification.
