20 to 30 miles maximum unless the car is a trade between two dealers. In that case they usually tell you so and let you know how many additional miles you can expect. When two dealers trade cars, they won't drive them if the distance between them is over 250 miles/4hrs. In that case they'll use a transporter and make the buyer foot the bill as well.

: Ok, this may sound silly, but the demo discussion below got
: me thinking -- how many miles should a brand spankin' new
: bimmer off the boat have on it? 2? 5? 10?

: One presumes they drove the think *some* distance before
: it hit the ocean.

: While were at it - how many miles before you start suspecting
: that they dealer took your car for a spin before you pick it
: up? Is it even legal for them to use your car for a demo if
: you ordered it and put a deposit down?

: I've bought several new cars in the past, but they were always
: part of dealer stock, and had as low as 20 miles, as high
: as 200.
