OK, the E46 is both longer and wider than the E36. The gains in the new model equate to a wider interior (more shoulder and hip room, as well as a feeling of greater distance to the passenger from the drivers seat), and more leg room in the rear. Sit in the drivers seat with a passenger next to you in both models and you can readily tell the difference.

You can also notice the difference from the exterior -- if you pull-up behind the E46 it shows more like a 5er than 3er.

: Ok... I don't own either E36 or E46 and only have driven them a couple times. However, from what I have observed, I feel E46 is somewhat smaller than E36. I know the all the numbers in size comparison would prove me wrong, but I think it's an optical illusion thing.. cus E46 is so rounded that it feels smaller and more compact.

: feel free to disagree with me...

: Sincerely,

: Chris H.
