: I am interested in buying a used M3 and am wondering when the body style changed from the older boxy look to the new style. I am interested in your opinions on which year is the one to get if you had your choice, excluding 98's or 99's.

The E36 M3 (current M3 body) first showed up in the US as a '95 model with a 3.0L I6 engine. This car had OBDI. It was only available as a Coupe. In 96+, the engine was upgraded to a 3.2L, however using OBDII- making upgrading such things as ECU, intake system, etc very difficult (almost impossible). A sedan was introduced as was a luxury pckg in 96&97. If you want a sedan, you cannot get a 95 M3. If you want to tweak the car as much as possible, buy a 95. Otherwise, consider a 97 Coupe or Sedan. You really can't go wrong any which way you decide.
