Good subject. I have some very interesting information on this topic. A few years ago an Italian company called MAS (I don't know what it stands for) won the subcontract from BMW to manufacture all their (BMW) wheels to BMWs specifications and design styles. The article (NY Times I think) didn't say who was making wheels for BMW before that.
Now here's where the story gets juicy. This company MAS, is also currently making BMW "replica" wheels that are currently being sold by people like Discount Tire Direcet (http://www.tires.com) at prices that are around $150.00 for the $390.00 BMW original. I (and an associate) have compared these "replica" wheels side-by-side to the BMW originals and neither of us can tell the difference! BTW my associate is an ME MIT grad who pointed out some interesting artifacts. It appears that the same casting process was used to make both wheels! He pointed out minor imperfections that were on BOTH wheels. Additionally we weighed both wheels - same weight with a few grams. Both have exactly the same dimensions (offset is identicle). And they both carry the same warranty on finish and structure. The wheels both have a 1-year warranty on the clear-coat and both have a lifetime warranty on the structural integrity. Even BMW Roundel logos in the centers.
Are we getting excited yet. I already purchased another "Double Spoke" style set (from Discount Tire Direct) for my winter wheels/tires on my 1998 E36. Get this, $750.00 for 4 wheels with 205-60 Yokohama Guardex tires mounted, balanced & delivered.
And I don't work for MAS or Dicount Tire Direct.
: Does most of BMW wheel manufactrued or made by BBS????
: Especially the one that come or available as an option for the E36 M3?? Thanx for the response.
