On page 102 of the E46 owner's manual: "To ensure that your vehicle provides maximum economy throughout a long service life, we request that you do the following:

Engine and Differential: Up to 1200 miles (2000 km): Drive at varying engine speeds and road speeds, but do not exceed the following engine speeds or road speeds at this time:
4500 rpm or 100 mph (160 km/h)
Refrain from using full throttle and avoid pressing the accelerator beyond the kickdown point. Once you have driven 1200 miles (2000 km), you can gradually increase the engine speed or road speed. Follow the same break-in procedure if either the engine or differential is repleaced in the future."
