My dealer's story matches yours, however they are able to trade slots with other dealers in order to decrease the lead time if they really want to please a customer.
My dealer had to trade slots since our company ordered 47 cars (323i and Z3 2.3) to be delivered November and December. Z3s have started arriving and 323s are expected in December.
: Well, I doubt it - my dealer seemed positive that
: my car would be built this week or next.
: Also, I'm pretty sure that it works this way: each dealer gets several "build slots". They can fill them any way the want until a week or two before the actual build date of the car, at which point it's commited to metal and there is no turing back. So - when you ordered, your dealer may had
: a slot open closer in than mine did.
: I say this because one of the dealers I spoke to (who would not discount a 323i AT ALL, by the way) said that he had one build slot coming up really fast and that if I paid full list he'd give me that slot - my car would be on the boat the last week of October (This was around the last week of September). I declined.
: Can anyone confirm if the above is indeed the way the process indeed works?

: : My dealer just informed me that my E46 is on the boat and on it's way over!
: : Yeehaa!
: : From what they can tell I should be getting delivery about the 1st week of December. This is about 2 weeks AHEAD of what they have been telling me.
: : Jeff, you may want to double-check and see if yours is on the same boat...
