I also posted this message onthe 5 series page, and I would like to hear your opinions:

I had a E36 3 series stick, and it was one of the best cars I owned, very fun to drive- especially the slick shifting manual transmission.

Now I thought I would move up in the world and get a 5 series, likely a 540i/6-sp. I was a little concerned about a 5-er being less nimble than the smaller 3-er, but a larger car would be better for my family.

However, I was very disappointed when I recently test drove the 540. The stick shift is less smooth, more notchy, and has much longer throws than the 3. I drove a new E46 328, and it has the same slick feel as my recent car.

Here is my dilemma: was my test drive and accurate experience. How did you guys like the manual 54O vs manual 328. How does the shifting feel compare, and which is more fun to drive. And how does the 528/5-sp compare with the 540/6-sp

Now I am not sure whether to get a 3 series, or maybe an M3....

You comments will be much appreciated.
