Although no one can put a positive spin on these kinds of incidences - which must be rare for any automobile - I think you must chalk this up as pure bad luck.

Understanding the causes is like searching for the reason of an airplance crash - but there must be suspicion somewhere. A poorly installed injector or one that had been removed and poorly replaced? I would ask the dealer's service dept if they had used your car for a little "OJT" - on-the-job training. Did you see the failed injector? Ask them to show it to you. If they trashed it - I wouldn't believe them because they must send it back to the factory for analysis. This is in a sense a catastrophic failure with dire consequences. BMW NA should be notified and the integrity of all installed injectors should be questioned.

I would also check the engine bay for collateral damage such as deterioating rubber and plastic.
