When I bought my '99 M3, people asked me why I didn't wait for the E46 M3. Well, my reasoning was
a) not wanting to wait that long (sometime in 2000), my old car was 6 years old already
b) I don't know if I'll even like the looks (like the rear end people keep telling me makes the sedan look like a Honda). From spy shots, the car looks less aggressive looking.
c) I may not fit comfortably in the E46 M3 (I'm 6'7", it's a big deal to me...no pun intended).
d) I've heard rumors of it costing up to $10k more...too much for me, at least right now
e) NEVER EVER buy a first year model. e.g. '95 M3s had problems and upgraded quite a bit for '96+. Z3 had a 1.9L I4 for a while at first and now comes standard with the 2.3L I6. I look at it like the first release of software. Wait to buy it after the bugs have been fixed. I see mentions of squeaking noises when going over bumps in new E46s. That's one of those 1st year problems.
Reasons to wait and get an E46 M3:
a) (this one I miss in my M3)...telescoping steering wheel assuming they have it like the sedan does.
b) more legroom in the E46 sedan, don't know about the coupe since they're not out.
c) More power! Bigger wheels
d) All the little techno gadgets mentioned already
e) possibility they may not have my Estoril Blue for the new model frightened me. (a stranger just came up and complimented me on the color of my car the other day, not something I'm used to but it was cool).
: Man !
: You have been going back and forth on this since I have known you. That's OK. It is one of those once in every 5 year decisions and I know how you feel. Just a little side note. The E46 has fixed everything that was missing on the E36 and thensome. If you get the M3, you will get performance and handling like no other, but you will also get all the E36's shortcomings such as lack on interior room, cheap dash material, small trunk, older style body, and miss out on the new technology such as CBC, HPS, and Lock & Key features, not to mention numerous others. There is the much better body rigidity and cool headlights too on the "New 3".
: I am not trying to dissuade you Chris from buying an E36 M3, but the E46 is truely a beautiful thing. An M3 is great too, but the new M3 will be here before you know it and you will hate yourself forever by getting the old E36.
: Good Luck Mr. Indecisive! :-)
