According to a few sources, the oddd size of the head unit along with the steering wheel functions that go along with the standard or HK unit, make the changing of the head unit somewhat impossible if not worthwhile. If you don't mind giving up your volume and tape/CD up/down functions, it may be possible but I would not do it. Look at the size of the E46 head unit radio and you will see that is shaped slighly odd into the dashboard and thus putting an aftermarket radio will definitely be a minus as far as appearance is concerned.
