Here's the scoop:
While BMW uses both Alpine and/or Pioneer CD changers in various car models, these units' control mechanisms are altered so they ONLY work with the OEM BMW head units.
If you want to use an aftermarket CD changer you are out of luck. You either buy the BMW changer or spend the money to change the head and CD changer.
You may want to try they have tons of good aftermarket stereo stuff for BMWs.
I went throught this before on both my 318ti and Z3. I've learned. I ordered the BMW CD changer on my new E46.

In the past there were some companies that provided adaptors for use with BMW stereos but I have not seen any for post 96 models.
