: I understand from what I've read here that most everyone finds the 323 (E-46) to be somewhat lacking in initial acceleration, especially in first gear. Does the engine have a true lack of spark from a dead stop or is everyone just being overly critical? I haven't had an opportunity to drive a 323 but have driven the 328 and wasn't really impressed with its acceleration, to tell the truth. I mean is felt strong, but not exceptionally fast. Also, does the 323 have a lag in all the other phases of acceleration (much like my GS-R) or does it feel like it's in the power band all the time?

: Please offer your insights, all you that have driven a new 323 E-46.

: (No offense, but please not another reprint of the comparision test.)

If you're referring to my comparison test, ok... :-o

I think that with the 323 once you've got to 2500RPM it feels pretty good. I never said it's not nice -- it feels a lot better than a lot of the cars on the road; it's just that owning a Maxima has made me a glutton for low-end torque.

The 328.. well in the city it doesn't "feel" that fast but that's because it's so smooth. And on the highway is where it really shines; I didn't have stopwatch with me but 3rd gear 60+ acceleration seemed quite a bit better in the 328 than the Max; the 323 was bit weaker but here its short gearing conspired against it because of the 82mph 3-4 upshift..

Just MHO.. if you (don't?) want more elaboration lemme know.. --Andi
