The performance is great, but I must agree that it looks like a pricy econobox. Even though the style is freshened up for 1999, it still is easy to confuse this model with 3-series cars dated from 1990. Car & Driver 11/98: "driving this car around gets few stares. I've driven past last generation 3-series owners, and even they barely glance over".
