The E36 is the body style from the 1992 to the present year. That is the ones you usually see on the streets with the quad lamps encased in a plastic cover. This bodystyle in 1999 is still being made but only in the coupe, convertible, and the ti versions.

The E46 is the ALL NEW 3 series sedan introduced in April 98 and is currently being sold as a sedan for the 99 year model. This is the new 3 series that has some resemblance to the current 5 series model.

The E36?E46 is the body style designation and has nothing to do with the engine size, diplacement, 4 cyliner, 6 cylinder, etc.

If you need more info, you can e-mail me and I will tell you more since I am buying a new 1999 BMW E46 323i sedan.
