I'm trying to decide WHEN to change the trans and diff fluids on my 98 E36 (has synthetic fluid in both). Dealer says changing it is not required. They also say 10,000 miles on oil changes is OK too ;-|

98 E36 3,800 miles

: Two questions:

: 1. BMW specifies an ATF for the fluid change in the E36 man. trans. My question is: Can I use a manual trans fluid instead? If no, why not?

: 2. Does anyone have any techniques they would like to share on filling the hard to get to trans.filler hole from the top? (I have no lift to work with to make a bottom entry and I would like to change the fluid myself).

: Thanks, Jim Long
