I have removed the seat pans from an E36 and E46. The principal is the same for both cases. Only one critical difference is that on the E36 the airbag sensor is located in the center of the pan and care should be taken not to disturb the wiring or the box itself.
In both cases, lift each outside front corner of the pan straight up. It takes quite a yank to do it to get the clips undone. Do one corner then go to the other side of the car and do the other. Then left the front center of the pan. Once unhooked, just lift the entire pan out being careful about the seat belts and the wiring I mentioned earlier.
I have not removed a seat back so I don't know how.
Re-installation of the pan is the reverse of the above. Slide the pan in, back end first so it meets with seat back properly. Ensure that the belts are all extended and stretched over the back so they are out of the way. The short ends of the belts have to be fished out one at a time.
Once the pan is in place, push done of the corners. They should clip into place. Then do the center. If nothing clips properly, then the pan is out of position. Position it properly and try again.

Hope this helps.
