: : For all you audiophiles out there who isn't into competitions and won't spend $800 on a head unit, here's a great head unit for you. I picked up the latest issue of Car Audio and Electronics which gave a brief review of the NEW Blaupunkt Alaska and thought this would be perfect for my new e46. It's ALL digital after it get's mixed down from the antenna into IF. (40Wx4) It looks good and one of the main reasons I'm looking only into Blaupunkt is because that's the only unit which matches closest to BMW's dash color. It's MSRP is $370. Check it out, I hope to get it installed some time in a few months.
: You can get the Alaska from continentalimports.com
: in Florida for $309.94. I bought a Blaupunkt Toronto for my 98 Z3 from them.I also got a wiring harness for my car and installed it myself in about 30 minutes.Much better sound than the stock Alpine unit from factory.I bought the Toronto because it's variocolor feature matches the amber lights in my BMW.
Both of you seem to have some insight into improving the E46 sound system. I'm not a real audiophile; however, the stock system lacks fidelity, depth, and mid-range compared to even my Ford truck. Is the problem the speakers, speaker placement, lousy electonics or what? Will changing out the head unit with the ones you recommend without a speaker upgrade make much difference? Also, will I lose the remote control features activated from the steering wheel which comes with the premimum package? Any advise is much appreciated.
