In Reply to: To Alan: How about an E-Mail list? (long) posted by Andy on December 26, 1998 at 13:38:45:

: Since I decided to buy a BMW I have visited this board quite often and it's been really informative. However, there are a small number of people who spoil the party here. People who don't even have the guts to post their e-mail adress, people who do nothing more than wasting bandwith with their trash talk.
: Now, have you ever thought about creating an e-mail list for those people who want to share information and experiences rather than those who flame everybody that doesn't conform to their smallminded world?
: I was a member of the VR6 list, and I can tell you, there is much less flaming and immature posting on that list; simply because you have to give your REAL e-mail adress to join. Flamers tend to become very silent when they can't hide in anonymity.

Jeff's got a nice site and an email list at http://www.E46.com/. Check it out.

I like running message boards, so that's what I do instead of running lists...each has their advantages and disadvantages. It isn't hard for someone to set up a hotmail.com or some other account to hide their real email address--you should have seen the recent flame war on the BMW Digest mailing list...ugh!

Anyway, whether on this site or on the E46 mailing list, whenever there are flames, resisting the urge to respond is usually the quickest way to put out the fire.
