Drive both the new E46 and the improved 99.5 A4 and buy the one you think is better. Both cars have pros and cons. From personal experience, the BMW is a bit sportier, and I prefer the heavier feel of the steering. IMO, the Audi steering is too light, but I appreciate the more comfortable interior and smoother, quieter ride. You can't go wrong with either car. I commute a total of 3 hours each day to school at USC. For my commute, I would pick the A4 ANYDAY. It's much more comfortable. Cruising on a wide open road, it's a toss up. In a race, I'd prefer the BMW.
