In Reply to: If A4 99.5 price the same as 99, you get an A4?... posted by D. Milano on December 28, 1998 at 17:56:22:
for starters, I think the A4 is as nice as the 3 series in road feel and sportiness as well as looks. Both are awesome, and I love both. I don't not know how the A4 compares to the E46, since I've never driven one. I do know, however, that in most respects my A4 is superior to my 325is. If you want an awesome sporty car, just get an A4 1.8T with a $160 Neuspeed chip that brings the horsepower to 180. This upgrade is safe and doesn't affect the long term reliability of the car. The Audi TT runs the same engine with a chip upgrade to 180 hp too. This chip upgrade is also undetectable. Even without the chip, my A4 1.8T equals my 325is in acceleration and it is equally good on twisties. All this for around $24,000. As for status, I choose not to drive my BMW to school because I'd fall into the SNOB USC Bimmer crowd. People, including those who know NOTHING about cars, are impressed by BMWs. That's awesome, but talk to anyone who is a car enthusiast, and he/she will know that the A4 is a VERY good car. Anyways, a person should drive both, and then get what he prefers. Personally, I'm still 19 years old, so cost was a HUGE motivating factor when I purchased my A4. A 1999 323is would have cost me more than $30,000 optioned equal to the 1.8T. That was over a $6,000 difference. I saved myself a semester's tuition along with enough cash left over for some aftermarket toys. For the price of the 1.8T, the only BMW available is the 318ti, and I think that car just plain stinks. The BMW 1.8 liter is NOTHING compared to the Audi 1.8 liter. The BMW engine is noisy, buzzy, and slow. Anyways, that's all I have to say. Happy motoring.
