The sound isn't different (unless you go to ultra high end in dash units) between the changer and the in-dash unless you work with the RF changer (radio station esc changer described below) type that he was talking about. There are essentially identical transports and DA converters in both, their are advantages in terms of cable distances for changers but that is only if you are getting into after market amps and such.

Basically the changer can be set up so that it plays on a certain station on your radio, when you tune your radio to that station you get what is playing on your CD changer. Easy install, but not as good sound quality.

IMHO, Alpine is a good brand for the money but definitely can't be called the best.
