alan, I think you are right too. couldnt believe it myself but I took time off work today to test drive both. Auto gear one and two is wanting. wish they made that damn steptronic or atleast have a more decent sport auto mode than the current one which is lousy. What I just cant believe is that I am having such a hard time about it. I make major decisions at work in seconds and here I am wailing about losing my stick privileges. Not sure that it is about being macho (could be I guess) - since I do not know the first thing about what is under the hood; am just a good driver if I say so myself. do not need speed but definitely need acceleration. basically a city driver who curses the city traffic lights but not the traffic since I love the winding in and out. So for now auto it is. I will check for more postings and decide by tomorrow morning. Thanks all.

: : Am considering an automatic (god forbid me from myself). Am a die hard stick shift fanatic but I have seriously started to consider whether my foot tendon problems are due to too much shifting in my 6 cylinder Mazda 626. Then again, it may be that my current car has a hard clutch. I could not test drive a single 328i stick shift since my dealer did not have any. For now, I have ordered it with an automatic - any thoughts for someone who lives in a metropolitan area with constant shifting. Any thought from people who have had similar withdrawal symptoms. I hope I do not feel ashamed of looking like a yuppie with a leather upholstered sport packaged black 328i with an automatic transmission.

: Hi Ran, You go and buy whatever is best for you. I think you answered your own question; you are tired of shifting. And there's nothing wrong with that; I'm sure everybody who drives in heavy traffic wishes they had an automatic at times. Here in the D.C. area I have tired of shifting when in heavy traffic. So don't get any guilt trips about an automatic not being macho enough. A 5 speed can be a pain at times.
