I have a 98 328is, and have come across a few Maximas, but I've always been able to pull away. I'm not saying that I left them spinning, but I put some distance between us. The Maxima's still a quick car, though. It has a larger displacement engine and a better power to weight ratio. That's easy to do. It still doesn't make the Maxima faster, because things like gearing, shift throw, drivetrain loss, as well as driver skill and other factors can change the equation. BMW could easily increase displacement of the 328 to 3.0 liters without spending much money (and they will soon). I've found that it's not difficult or expensive to make fast cars and large displacement (just look at the camaro or mustang), but it is difficult to make ones that do so much so well as BMW does.
