Same as the badges people wear to get past security doors at work nowadays. The car transmits radio waves at a certain frequency. The chip has a tiny antenna inside, fron which it pulls enough current to power up the chip and transmit back a coded signal. The car listens for this signal, and lets you start once it hears it.

It may be suseptible to *extreme* magnetic fields - like MRI machines, superconductors, electromagnetic cranes, etc - but I wouldn't worry about it.
