: Hi everyone,
: I'm considering adding an alarm to my 323i. I'm not knowledgable enough to install the alarm myself so I'll have to pay the dealership price (which IMO is way too much). Do I still need the alarm system considering BMW's claim for the E46's security:
: 1. Virtually theft proof (unless towed, etc)
: 2. If doors locked with alarm, even when windows are broken the doors can't be opened or unlocked from inside. Thus, theives would have to climb through the broken window just to get to little items. I doubt they'd do that.
: 3. BMW stereo is useless if stolen.
: 4. Trunk can't be jimmy-ed into because key hole is not directly above locking clasps.
: In consideration of these factors, and together with the fact that I won't leave belongings in plain view, do you think the alarm is a worthwhile investment?
: Help please. Thanks.

The use of the BMW alarm is not so much to deter theft as it is to deter breakage/damage to your car. The car is so hard to steal w/o the key, and of course the stereo is useless unless the thief knows someone at a dealership, but why have some amateur break yor window an still the stereo causing hundreds of dollars to of damage to your BMW when they might be detered by the flashing light on the rv mirror? Spend the money and sleep at night, believe me I have put an alarm on all 3 of my E36's and will do so on my next E46.
Best wishes, Bill
