I think that the wood trim on any BMW, especially a 3 series is out of place. Also because of the darker color of the wood trim available on the U.S. models, it does not look good with darker color interiors such as black. In Germany, many other types and shades of wood are available, either as a regular option, or as a "BMW Individual" upgrade. Some of the different wood colors available are blond, gray, blue, and even yellow. Personally I think the matte/brushed aluminum trim not only looks great but also goes much better with the modern design of the E46. As far as cleaning the aluminum trim goes, the kitchen cabinets in my house have a lot of the same type of brushed aluminum trim and they clean very easily with products like "409" degreaser/cleaner. I think the kitchen trim gets much more oil/grease and water on it than the car trim would ever get. So, I would recommend getting the aluminum trim, but I think it goes much better with the two tone gray interior. I think that there is too much contrast between the aluminum and the black interior.
