I have the aluminum trim in my 328i. Lived with it for about five months now with myself, a wife, a four year old son, and various other folks in the car touching the trim in some way. The only spot that I have never been able to quite get clean to my total satisfaction is where the airbag warning sticker was before being yanked off. I've only ever used Windex or another light cleaning product when I wash the car. One of these days I'll try a polish and see how that works. It's noticeable when you really stare at it but mostly don't notice it at all.

My car is white with back leather. Personally, I much prefer the aluminum trim in black or gray interior cars. Wood looks better to me with tan interiors. I also think that wood is slightly out of character in a car that is more sporting than luxurious in design. My $.02.
