I bought the 328i equipped like you said. (sport package only.) I purchased this car because it is the best stock performer in class. (by class, I mean small sport sedan--at any price.)

While I do think that it is absurd that a M car can be ordered with an automatic transmission, I don't know if it's all that absurd with non M's. (Maybe the 328, 540, and 750 shouldn't offer autos being the more performance oriented of each series.) At least, unlike Mercedes, BMW's come standard with Manual transmissions in the US(aside from 7er). If BMW made cars only for the true enthusiast--not too many Americans would buy them--and BMW would be in finacial trouble. (BMWNA predicts 80% of 1999 E46 line will be automatic transmission.)

yes, it is somewhat embarrasing being associated with BMW as a luxo-car. (Although I told one friend, who wouldn't buy a Mercedes because of 'snobby' image, and she knew right away that I bought the BMW for performance.)
