Not so! The E46 has a motion detector which is installed in the plastic housing on the roof of the cabin. It also has a tilt sensor which is mounted in the trunk.

The real advantage of the BMW OEM alarm is that it is totally integrated with the remote control. For $215 from Quality Imports + 30 minutes or less to install it yourself, it is the obvious choice.
