Brake pads and rotors are cheaper to replace than clutches and transmissions. Downshift only when you anticipate that you won't be coming to a full stop (only slowing down) and will need power quickly (or if you're on a a really steep hill and your brakes need help).

: I've got a stick question for you guys. Don't think this is silly but I learned to drive on a stick and then my first car was a used auto, now I've orderd my first new car hehe! 323i /sports and it's 5 speed. and the question I have for you is this, when say on the highway or coming to a red light is it better on the car to downshift through the gears? or to shift into neutral and slowly brake to stop?
