Thanks for all the replies ...

I realize that the head unit isn't the weak link, and am I planning on replacing all the factory speakers and amp in addition to the head unit. The replacement of speakers and amp are relatively easy, though, in comparision to replacing the head unit.

The biggest reason to replace the head unit is that I never listen to cassettes, and that's the head unit I have. My 328 didn't come with the CD head unit. I also wouldn't mind listing to MD's occasionally in the car, as well and that's not really an option from BMW.

Crutchfield doesn't have any answers for the E46. They in fact told me that it had a standard DIN radio in it. I told him, "No it doesn't." He still thinks it does...

Perhaps an aftermarket head unit won't really be possible for a while due to the size problems. Would it be possible to put in the CD head unit from BMW after the fact? Is it really going to cost me?
