: Bought my 328-E46 almost a month ago, but traded back last week for a 99-528.

: The E46 was not what I expected. Why?

: Few things:

: Handling: The car driving past the 80s seemed not as stable as I had anticipated. Felt like going "fast". Remarkably, in my old E36 fast was not "too fast". Still had some extra speed miles to go before holding up the pedal.

: Looks: Inside looked bigger than the previous E36, but on the outside for some reason smaller and too toyish. I still believe the E36 has much better looks. This one looked to me like a 5er clone. Not the 3 series ultimate driving machine I was once used to. I asked myself many times the same question, where did it go?

: CD: The stock premium stereo not worth the price, the CD skipped over small bumps. Annoying.

: Air noise: There was some mild air noise coming from the driver's side at high speeds (80+). Annoying too.

: Where is the 3 series kick ass identity? Lost ?

: I personally feel the new 528 changes MOST of that. At least I feel in was getting a true 5er. Not a 7er clone.

: Sorry guys, but THIS IS MY PERSONAL OPINION, I like the 3 series, always will, but I believe I did what I had to. My new 528 worth the extra bucks. Maybe next time.

: Anyone with the same dilema?

I must be in the minority, but think they did a great "evolutionary" job on the E46 as a natural progression for the E36, as great a car as that is. Also, as I've posted on the E39 board, it's time for BMW to quity screwing around and enter the 20th century (before it's too late!!) in the sound system department--a skipping CD is unforgivable!! Just clone the excellent system from a top Camry and move on!! Too many posts on this and E39 on "not enough bass, not enough treble, doesn't do this, doesn't do that, problems with this and that." I had a 91 Celica GTS that ran (OEM sound system) circles around any of this stuff. A friend's 96 Camry, ditto. What gives? Terrible! The E39 doesn't even have an in dash CD in NA yet (though they do in Europe!)!! BMW, there's NO excuse!! Great cars otherwise, why second-rate sound systems? Where is it written that we can have great handling and engines, and not the same in sound? Is there some teutonic mutual exclusionary engineering going on here? I have an E46 and E39 in the family--neither measure up with even these models' top/premium systems..yet, after $40K and $55K respectively, it's ludicrous (and prohibitive) to rip out factory systems for "custom."
