My 323i (built Feb/arrival Apr) ordered in Australia will also have cloth trim although leather is the only choice normally. They say mine will be the only one in Australia. Surely others would order it too if they knew that with a bit of stirring it can be done...
BTW there is a nice leather/cloth (a differnet type cloth) combo available with the sport seats in the UK. I collected a brochure at Xmas while there - so if anyone is interested I can scan and post...
: Last October I ordered a '99 328i with cloth seats (SF bay area) and it was no trouble getting BMWNA to accept it. The trick was finding a dealer willing to make the effort. It didn't add anything to the price of the car, and even though they said allow 4-6 extra weeks for the delivery, it didn't take any longer than normal.
: Other special orders that they routinely do in other countries, they refused to do, however. Like giving me a non-smoker package ("If you don't want the ash trays, don't use them!") or delete the cell phone antenna ("All E46s world wide have them, so all the roofs have holes punched in them. Maybe we'll let it be deleted for MY 2000." All this in spite of the fact that almost all the pictures in the brochures don't have the antenna.)
: : I have noticed from numerous posts that many of you would prefer cloth interiors for the E46 but are told by the salespeople, and the BMW brochures that they are not available in the U.S. In 1997 I ordered a 528i and requested the gray velour interior even though the 5 series brochure stated that only leather and leatherette were available. The salesman found the option code for gray cloth and orderd my car with this option. BMW of North America had no problems with this special order. I was able to get the gray velour interior AT NO EXTRA COST, even though according to the brochure it is not available. If you are interested in cloth and are willing to order your car and wait for it, or if you are doing Euro Delivery anyway, then ask the salesman to order your car in cloth. If you live in the LA area call Keith Kruiser at Pacific BMW (818) 246-5600. He can help you with ordering the cloth seats.
