I have some similar issues. The difference is that I am in the portfolio management field and report to investment companies and trusts. As a result, I cannot be too flashy though I do not have any cubicle, cave or room dwelling boss. So I have to have a sedan and if it is a sports, I need a conservative colour atleast. So I hope the 328 black sports package fits the bill. When you guys talk about all this, I start worrying - so please stop about the image issues. I do not think a boss will fire you guys but investors may not invest with me in future deals that I bring before them if I am too flashy. Next car will be an M3 with a 323 badge. Talk about down-badging...the opposite of all that crazy talk in the M3 forum about people using the M logo on other cars..

Of course bottom line, who cares. And my plan is to have a flat, and rent a clunker every time I have a meeting in New York or better yet advertise the fact that I go Grey (Greyhound). Wife says that it wont be such an issue and they all expect me to be in a nice car Andy Grove from Intel said, "only the paranoid survive".

: Anyone at my workplace who finds out what car I bought responds with "We must be paying you too much." (even though my 328 doesn't cost much/any more than the SUV's in the lot.) They don't seem to be caught up in the image part of the BMW. My friends joke with me about owning a "rich person's car."

: I think for as many people out there who THINK you bought the car as a status symbol, there are an equal amount of people who KNOW you bought the car for performance. I was telling an aquaintance of mine about buying a new car. I thought she was going to be surprised with my purchase. (She recently purchased a Volvo XC, instead of the MB SUV because of the stigma attached to Mercedes.) Anyway, she wasn't surprised. She said "you bought it because it's fast." Isn't that the truth!

: Anyway, who cares what people think.
