After a long string of sports cars, I had to buy a "grown up's car" for family reasons back in '92, a Dodge Grand Caravan LE AWD. No one thought I was making too much money or that I was even making a lot. When I took delivery of my 323i this month, I got some comments about "making too much money." Interesting enough, the price of a '99 version of Dodge Grand Caravan LE AWD is just about the same as my 323i. So, I could buy another Dodge and make everyone at work feel good or buy a 323i and make me feel good. I did the latter.
: I've been thinking about this one lately, particularly because I'll be entering the workforce soon. I wanted to get your opinions/experiences on BMW stereotyping. A couple of summers ago I was an intern/janitor at a corporate flight department. One of the lower level guy who worked there bought a used 325is for $20k. Most of the guys above him, including the bosses, were complaining about how "the parts guy" could afford to buy a BMW. I realize that it was mostly out of jelousy. This fellow wasn't car "savvy" and I believe he did buy the car because of the styling/image factor. Even my dad said he wouldn't get a BMW as his next company car [because of the image thing]. It seems the stereotyping of BMW owners as being status symbols for their owners is widespread and quite powerful. I think it sucks that people can't judge a car on it's merits. It all has to come down to image. It would suck to not be able to get the car I want just because I didn't want to offend the boss. Not that I really how the boss feals about my car but it does suck that people can be so shallow.
