Just got the fax from my dealer with PICTURES and step by step instructions on how to take the front driver/passenger door panels apart, this info is from BMW AG TIS (not sure what TIS stands for).

if anyone is interested, I will post the instructions.
the pictures didn't come out too well over the fax. I may stop by my dealer some time and get a copy of the original.

It looks fairly straight forward, one special tool is necessary. it is part # 00-9-317 trim panel wedge. I think a flat blade can be used but they said to avoid damage to the trim panel, the tool is recommended. I'm not sure how much it costs.

hopefully the weather will get better this weekend so I can take my door panel off and find/fix that annoying rattle.
