Thank you so much for the valuable information! I will give it a try. I now have only 1k miles, and it took me a month to build that! Then only thing is go get the filter and o-ring that you are talking about. Are they only sold at dealers? or you can get them at all auto shops?
: I do oil changes myself. 7 quarts of Mobil 1 costs me about $25 with tax. a filter is $7.25 with tax. so the total is $32.25 plus about 1/2 hour of my time.
: it is fairly straight forward, drive the car up on ramps, loosen oil filler cap, crawl under car, unscrew bolt on oil pan, let oil drain for a few mins. While it's draining, I open the oil filter cap, take out the oild filter insert, put in the new ones, put on the new O-rings, then put the cap back on. after the oil is drained, I tighten the bolt on the oil pan, then refill with 7 qt of Mobil 1, then take the car out for a spin (15 mins or so to warm it up) and then I let it sit for 10 mins, check oil level and I'm done.
: you don't need to reset anything. for major oil service (when light need to be reset) I take it into the dealer and have them do it, or you can spend $50 on a tool and reset it yourself. the tool is fairly fool proof and only takes a few seconds to reset the light.
: : Thank you for your input. I also plan to keep this car for as long as it runs! But 70 dollar oil changes seem to be a bit too much. I also thought about doing it myself, but being a first time BMW owner, I am puzzled with all the electronic stuff in this car. Do you do oil change yourself? Mobile 1 syn oil? reset key?
: : Thanks again
: : : I'm planning on changing my oil every 5k miles (which for me is every 5 weeks). I will do the first change this weekend at roughly 2k, and then the next one in a few weeks when it reach 5k. then after that, it will be at 10k/15k/20k (every 5k).
: : : I think changing it frequently is cheap insurance to ensure the car will run well for a long time.
: : : If you don't keep your car for more then 2 or 3 years then you don't really need to change that often (unless you want to make sure the next owner will get a nice car).
: : : I plan to keep mine for 200k to 300k miles so I will change it often.

: : : : To you all E46 owners,
: : : : Do you all go by the service interval indicator or go by mileages driven?
: : : : I've seen a few people changing oil after 3000 miles even though it's "long life oil". Dealer also told me to change oil more frequent than the indicator says! but the owner manual says that you only need to change oil when the indicator says so.
: : : : What do you say?
: : : : Thank you all for sharing......
