There's no denying the Contour is fast. It's low price is due to it's cheap parts. Ford's approach to performance cars is add big engine, body cladding, and wide tires and go cheap everywhere else. The SVT looks sporty but if you look closely, cheap plastic is everywhere. Look at a Mustang, or an SHO. The interiors are very downmarket in both cases. C&D rated these cars with performance bang for the buck in mind, so the Contour SVT'S finish in relation to the others is not surprising. In a real-world buying situation, I could not overlook the lack of value this car really gives you. I'd feel like I'd been ripped off every time I sat in the car. It really looks like a tricked-out rental car. The Jetta on the other hand, is simple but has a quality look and feel to it, and you can always upgrade the performance.
