I test drove the SVT before buying the 328. (Less expensive, but didn't have the same power, or more importantly, torque.) Also, was a FWDer. Performance felt similar to A4 2.8. Handling was roughly equivalent. The seats were very comfortable. According to Consumer Reports, it is just as reliable as A4. Fit and finish is of a slightly lower quality but that doesn't affect the reliability, only appearance. Yes, the interior does look cheap. As far as plastic add-ons, you got 'em on your E46. It is important to note that the SVT is directed at the enthusiast, not being available with an automatic transmission.
Also, the Contour is essentially a Mondeo. Engineered by Ford of Europe, and drivetrain built in Germany. That's why it drives better than a VW. (look at the Monroney label if you don't believe me.)
In my experience with current VW's, I would easily pick the Ford over VW products.
I can't believe you are so close minded/biased that you would not consider other cars being comparable. It is people like you who give BMW a snobby image in the US.
