In Reply to: According to my brother, 323i vs. A4 test on C&D.. posted by Alex on March 02, 1999 at 20:01:10:

The article was a comparison of cars under $25,000. Don't blame Car and Driver for picking a base 323i - blame BMW for pricing it above $25K with the sport package! I can't believe how upset people get at these comparisons - it's like you guys think everyone else has to think and behave exactly like you or they are wrong. There's nothing wrong with someone buying an Audi, Ford, Chevy, VW, or any other car they want - are you so insecure that you have to trash them for enjoying their decision??? Just relax and enjoy your E46 bro...

: The 323i tested was a base car with the 15" alloys. The A4 was fully loaded with Quattro, sport (16" alloys and 205 tires vs. 15" 195 tires for 323i) , and a whole bunch of other options. The A4 1.8T with all the extra options over the 323i just won by a single point. A SINGLE FREAKIN POINT!

: If they would have at least put the sport package on the 323i, I am sure it would have easily won over the A4 1.8.
: So much for fair testing at a "reputable" magazine. Equip them all the same (or close to same at least) before you test them you idiots (at C&D)! I do not care if the 323i would have cost an additional $1800 with the sport package. You gotta test performance with performance. The base 323i is the right match for the fully loaded A4 1.8QMS. No fair ! They never get it right, do they?
