Hmm. I know other magazines do this (quoting manufacturer and not testing). I remember the June '97 R&T Test "four door 5-speeds for fun." They said the Maxima SE 5-speed was limited to 112MPH. I have no idea where/how they got that figure - I've seen 6000RPM in 5th gear (144MPH) and it was still pulling. Accounting for speedo optimism, I still think I was close to 140.

I do remember that in a recent letters section of Car & Driver, a reader asked specifically if they actually test all the numbers they publish or if they quote manufacturers' numbers. C&D's reply (I think it was Csaba but I'm not sure) was something along the lines of "unlike some magazines that use a crystal ball to get their numbers, we use a test track to get all of our test results."

: They can't/won't go over the speed limiter. Plus that data is usally taken from teh manufacturer's data and is never tested.
