I was pulled over last year with a radar detector on my windshield (couldn't take it down fast enough!) in milwaukee and the first thing the cop said was that radar detectors are illegal. I argued with her on this matter for a while and later she said that the last time she checked they were illegal. Anyway, she didn't take my detectors but of course I got nailed for speeding! I too have seen many cars in wisconsin with detectors and I am pretty sure they are not illegal. I never had any problems pulling up next to cops where my detector was plainly visible. In addition, www.radar.org has a listing of states that ban radars and wisconsin is not one of them.
Comment: I actually think that driving a bit quicker than the speed limit is actually safer than just droning away with the rest of the traffic. I am by far more keenly aware of the roads and hazards when I am driving above the limit. Boredom and complacency while driving I think is much more of a hazzard.
I hate cops!
