: My dealer quoted a price of $399 for the E46 alarm installed on a new 323i
: I know the alarm is available for $240 but is $399 fair considering it would be there when I pick up the car and not have to mess with the installation?

The installation is not complicated, and you can do it yourself. Depending on your experience, it will take anywhere from 1/2 to 2 hours. All you have to be able to do is use a screwdriver. You will need a Torx 30 scredriver, which is available at any auto stre and costs about $5 (you probably can even return it after you're done)
Everything is pre-wired, so all you have to do is find a wire and plug it in. Sometimes when installing a motion sensor (inside the car) the wise is not visible and you have to look for it under the interior roof panel - this is what happened to me - and it took more time than I thought.
Dealer quoted me 1/2 labor ($107/hour rate) but chared only $32. I had to shop around though, because some dealer had no clue on what is that I wanted them to do. This is San Francisco Bay Area.

Good luck!
