Just a stupid BMW NA marketing thing. Unfortunately in the U.S. chrome is assossiated with "luxury" or "expensive" cars. Just look at all the wheels that the dealers have chromed and people here just love it and pay so much extra for it. I think it ruins the sporty image of the car. Just because the 328i is more expensive than the 323i BMW NA puts only chrome trim on it. In Germany the Shadowline trim is available on all models not just a selected few. If you are planning on ordering a 328i try to get the dealer to order the shadowline trim from the factory as a separate option using the European option code, that way the fit and finish will be better than replacing the chrome after the fact.
