This is a standard "feature" on BMW's new inline sixes. I have a 97 Z3 2.8 that does the exact same thing. However, it gets much better with time and you get used to it as the miles pile on. I actually do kind of like it now because it helps matching revs on downshifts. Btw someone explained this to me once and I remember that it made sense at the time but I can't really remember the explanation.
