With about 3500 miles on my 323i, the check engine light has come on 3 times. The first time was when it was brand new on its second tank. We brought it into the dealer, and although they acknowledged the gas cap had been replaced correctly, they went ahead and used "gas cap installed incorrectly" on the warranty paper work. It happened twice after that, both times with the cap installed correctly. We didn't bother taking it back t the dealer tho and it ended up going out again (the idiot light, that is) after about a week. I hate to say it, but it sounds like the fuel system monitor is a little buggy. BTW, we always use high-octane gas per the owners manual, from 76 or Chevron.

If you get a different or better explanation from the dealer, please post it.

: Less than 300 miles on 323 and check engine light comes on. Dealer says no bid deal, maybe gas cap not tight (this was NOT the case, ever). Have to wait days for appointment so they can "reset the light, and make sure everything is okay". Is this a common occurance, and what other than gas cap can cause this? Otherwise this car drives like a dream. Thanks for your help.
