I haven't heard of any problems with the GM five-speed 'box. Referring to the earlier post about the unit being made by "a French company" - it is a GM 'box, built at GM's plant in Strasbourg, Eastern France (close to the Munich and Regensburg BMW factories). The dealer is wrong about it being a Getrag unit; stickshifts are variable ZF or Getrag, not autos. Mind, dealers are frequently wrong about things.

Why the US E46/E39 gets GM 5-speed autos when the rest of the world gets a ZF unit I don't know. Seems silly. It keeps the price down I suppose.

If it's any help the US auto M3 used the same ZF unit as all Euro 6-pots.

: This might have been a freak incident, but I was just wondering if anyone has experienced sudden loss of power?

: I was driving down to NJ last night to pickup some relatives at the airport, when I got to NY, I stopped at a red light, then when the light turned green, I stepped on the gas, the rpms went sky higy (over 5k) the car didn't start as usuall, instead it inched very slowly forward.
: I double checked and it was indeed in gear (S 4, automatic)
: tried switching to D,4,3,2 but still the same thing.

: after crawling at about 3 mph for about 5 mins, then things
: went back to normal.

: no warning light came on and the drive back to MA afterwards was fine.

: Any reason I should be concerned? Any idea what happened?

: Jack
