I just had a relative pick up his brand new bright red 323i sport a few weeks ago. His interior is black leatherette and mine (323i sport, silver/gray leather) is of course, the real deal. I sat in his car the other day, and if he had not told me, there is no way in hell I would know that it was not leather. As far as the smell factor, whatever you get, you get used to it anyway, and after a while, you don't even smell your own car's leathere.

Take it from a guy who dished out $1230 for his leather: Don't waste your money. Get leatherette. Much easier to take care of and when it comes to resale, you don't get a dime on the leather you paid for (like I did).

Said all that, I would not get the tan leatherette though. It does look like plastic to me. The black is much better and it looks like the real thing. If they had gray leatherette, I would have gotten it in a heartbeat.

I hope that helps.

My $0.02 (I am sure other leather owners may disagree with me on this.)
